5 Style Lesson We Learned From The Craft

For better or worse, movies have always had an impact on pop culture and that impact naturally extends to fashion. Some of the most cult films, regardless of what one might think of their cinematic value, are not only still being watched, but their fashion influence seems to only get stronger with time. Although it is safe to say that Mean Girls and Clueless have left a substantial fashion imprint over the years, it appears that The Craft is the one movie that has managed to fully encapsulate all the ‘90s fashion trends.  In honor of their major comeback to the today’s fashion scene, here are the five most prominent style lessons from The Craft.

School Uniforms are Hella Sexy
Who said school uniforms have to be dull? These girls clearly prove otherwise. Aside from the mandatory plaid skirt, the uniform style is highly alterable. Lose the tie and unbutton the white shirt a bit, or better yet, ditch the shirt altogether and replace it with a white t-shirt featuring a bold print. Some form of cardigan is an absolute must, but there is some room for negotiation in that aspect as well. And to top things off, do not forget over-the-knee socks, one of the few clothing items that actually adds a value to a sexy outfit with its presence; sometimes more is more, right?

Chockers Travel in Packs
Chokers have had a pretty good run these past few years, and although their survival in the next season is up for debate, the one thing everyone should have remembered when they resurfaced is that they work best with multiple other necklaces and pendants. These girls show us that the rule that applies with jewelry is – the chunkier and busier – the better!

Spaghetti-Straps Are For Everyone
During the course of the movie, outside the school, spaghetti-strap dresses, whether mini or maxi, are the go-to choices for these girls. And these dresses do not come alone. Sure, Bonnie had a good reason for covering some skin, but even those without scars were seen sporting t-shirts under these dresses. So, if you do not feel comfortable baring your arms, or you simply wish to be onboard with current trends, feel free to style up your dress with a simple short-sleeve tee underneath.

Go Big or Go Home
When it comes to outerwear as well as footwear, these girls love it oversized – oversized blazers, trench coats, leather jackets, even sweaters. As for shoes, we have been witnesses to some major lace-up action in the boot department and it seems that a shoe is not really a shoe unless it is supper-chunky and comes with a heavy block heel. And yes, this all comes in black only; how else will you make the world know you are a bad-ass unless you rock some black. The oversized trend that The Craft schooled us on is apparently here to stay, and let us take a minute to thank the higher powers for that.

Messy Hair (And Dark Lips) Really Don’t Care
One final lesson that this movie has kindly bestowed upon us is that imperfect hair is kinda perfect, actually. It gave us the confidence to leave the house without even touching a hair-comb and at times even told us that it is ok if we did not have the time to wash our hair. Also, it makes a valuable point that you do not necessarily need to be a witch or dab in the dark arts to be eligible for wearing dark lipstick. So, if you are still a bit insecure about that dark purple shade you have been eyeing, now is the time to go get it.
